In June 2009, a Christian a wife and mother, Asia Bibi, was arrested by the police in Pakistan. In 2010, she was sentenced to death under Pakistan's anti-blasphemy law. Asia Bibi is the first woman in Pakistan’s history to be condemned to death under the country’s blasphemy laws. Her crime is to refuse to convert to Islam remaining true to her Christian faith. However, she is still being held while she awaits an appeals hearing more than two years later.

The Italian newspaper, Avvenire, is carrying out a campaign to support Asia Bibi. All those who wish to support Asia Bibi can send a message to the Pakistan President asking him to act in her favour. The message will be forwarded through the following link: http://tinyurl.com/preszardari.

The suggested message is:

I, the undersigned, adhere to the call for the release of Asia Bibi, a young woman sentenced to death in Pakistan with a specious charge of blasphemy and now in jail because of her faith.

I ask the president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, to act in her favour.
